Aleichem, Shalom (Solomon Naumovich Rabinovich) (1859-1916) Yiddish author, humorist and playwright from Ukraine. The musical "Fiddler on the Roof," based on his stories about Tevye the Dairyman, was the first commercially successful English-language stage production about Jewish life in Eastern Europe.
Autograph letter signed, 1p, in Hebrew, 5½ x 4½, Nervi, Italy, 1911, on personal stationery stamped : "S. Rabinowitz - Schalom Aleichem, Nervi (Itlalia) Villa Rosengarte." Rare Shalom Aleichem letter adressed to his friend Padelshevsky: "My dear and esteemed friend Padelshevsky: I would very much like to know if you received my modest gift that I sent you before the holiday. I thank you for your feelings of love and thanks to my family, and I send greetings to you and your family and conclude with love. Shalom Aleichem P.S. About my situation, I always have work to do. With thanks to God the creator of the World!" Very good; light soiling and fold marks at lower right. The "situation" referred to in the postscript may allude to his occasional difficulties in attaining commercial success. Fine condition. With translation. Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,300
