Die Menzaleh Canal & Navigation Company war eine Tochtergesellschaft der Anglo-American Nile Steamer and Hotel Company, die sich später in Anglo-American Nile & Tourist Company umbenannte. Die Firma wurde gegründet, um auf dem Menzâleh-See den Schiffsverkehr aufzunehmen. Sie beteiligte sich auch an dem Bau des 30 km langen Kanals zwischen Port Said und Matarîje. Durch ihn wurde eine direkte Verbindung Port Saids mit dem östlichen Nildelta hergestellt und hatte für den Inland-Frachtverkehr eine enorme Bedeutung, denn die Durchfahrt betrug nur etwa fünf Stunden. The company was founded to start maritime traffic at the Menzâleh Sea. The company was also involved in the building of the 30 kilometres long canal between Port Said and Matarîje. The canal meant a straight conjunction between Port Said and the eastern Nile Delta. It had huge meaning for the domestic traffic, because passage only lasted round about five hours. Zweck der Gesellschaft war der Erwerb, die Erneuerung und der Betrieb des schon damals traditionsreichen Luxushotels. Der Tempel des Sonnengottes Ra zog zahlreiche Pilger in die unterägyptische Stadt Heliopolis. So brauchte sich das Hotel um seine Auslastung keine Sorgen zu machen. Heute dient die abgebildete Hotelanlage als Sitz der ägyptischen Regierung. Als Quasi-Kolonie war Ägypten am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts im britischen Weltreich die Rolle des Baumwolllieferanten für Manchester zugedacht. Entsprechend dominierte dieser Sektor die gesamte Wirtschaft des Nillandes. Auch die meisten Banken, mit dem Crédit Foncier Egyptien an erster Stelle, finanzierten bevorzugt den Erwerb von Agrarflächen. Einer Diversifizierung der Wirtschaft und insbesondere dem Aufbau einer lokalen Industrie standen die britischen Statthalter durchweg skeptisch bis feindlich gegenüber. Umso erstaunlicher ist die Gründung der Industrial Bank of Egypt. Geistigen Rückhalt fand die Industrialisierungsidee nur beim damaligen Khediven Abbas Hilmi, der so auch 1895 die Gründung einer nationalen Spinnerei- und Weberei durch lokale Geschäftsleute freudig begrüßte. Da Abbas Hilmi jedoch kaum echten wirtschaftspolitischen Einfluss besaß und die wenigen industriellen Initiativen nicht ausreichend durch entsprechenden Unternehmergeist unterfüttert waren, fand die Industrial Bank keinen fruchtbaren Boden für das im Namen proklamierte Finanzierungsprogramm. Ohne nachweisbare Ergebnisse gab sie ihre Tätigkeit schnell wieder auf. Dennoch darf man in ihr den Versuch einer nationalen wirtschaftspolitischen Emanzipation von den Interessen der Kolonialmacht sehen. Erst ein halbes Jahrhundert später, am 18.04.1949, wurde auf staatliche Initiative eine neue Industrial Bank of Egypt gegründet. As a quasi-colony Egypt was intended to be the cotton supplier for Manchester in the British Empire at the end of the 19th century. Therefore this economic sector was engrossing the whole economy of the country on the Nile. Most banks, in the first place Crédit Foncier Egyptien, preferred to finance purchase of agricultural land. The British governors were sceptical or hostile towards the diversification of the economy and particularly towards the build-up of a local industry. The foundation of the Industrial Bank of Egypt is at the more surprising. The idea of industrialisation was supported by then khedive Abbas Hilmi, who was happy about the foundation of a national spinning and weaving company by local businessmen in 1895. Because Abbas Hilmi could not win economical and political influence and the entrepreneurial spirit of the industrial initiatives was not strong enough, the Industrial Bank was unsuccessful with its financing program. The bank stopped its operation showing poor results very soon. Nevertheless we can see an attempt of a national economy to become independent from the colonial power. Äußerst dekoratives Stück mit einer herrlichen Vignette. Sie zeigt Fellachen beim Pflügen. Vorgespannt sind ein Kamel und ein Ochse. Im Hintergrund Pyramiden. Im unteren Teil zwei Sphinxe. Die Gründung dieser Hypothekenbank erfolgte 1908 auf Initiative der Bank of Egypt im Zuge des Spekulationsfiebers (und des Zusammenbruchs der Cassa di Sconto), welches die Krise von 1907 ausgelöst hatte. Hauptsächlich französisches Kapital strömte massenhaft ins Land. England konnte da natürlich nicht abseits stehen. Dabei ist es interessant festzustellen, dass die Gesellschaft, obwohl sie ihren Hauptsitz in Kairo hatte, voll dem englischen Recht unterstand. Aber auch belgische (mit französischer Kapitalbeteiligung) sowie deutsche Banken eröffneten Niederlassungen oder eigene Banken im Lande, vor allem in Alexandrien und Kairo. The foundation of this mortgage bank was initialized by the Bank of Egypt in 1908 in the course of the speculation fever (and the collapse of the Cassa di Sconto) which had caused the crisis of 1907. Mainly French capital poured into the country, and England, of course, could not be the odd one out. It is interesting to note here that the company was fully subject to British law, although its head quarters were located in Cairo. However, also Belgian banks (with French participation) as well as German banks opened branches or independent banks in the country, primarily in Alexandria and Cairo. Land speculation was in full bloom, because within a few years the prices in the delta region quadrupled, in Upper Egypt they increased tenfold. Im Zuge der ägyptischen Revolution übernahm die neue nationalistische Regierung alle ausländischen Firmen. In Folge dessen wurde diese neue Gesellschaft gegründet, um die Konzession zu übernehmen.
