Obv.: Schoenberg to left (based on 1948 photo) w/ letters of name interspersed. Rev.: female face, wife(?) [Gertrud Bertha [Kolisch]]; Beck's initials top right corner. Schoenberg was Austrian-Jewish composer whose musical approach is considered one of most influential on 20th C. musical thought. The medallist is Hungarian son of Baptised Jewish medallist, Fülop (Philip) Beck; JMM-83-84. Described in 1976 by Friedenburg as "recent work", probably dates to Schoenberg's centennary, 1974. Simon Leo Reinisch was an Austrian Jewish Egyptologist & Africanist, founder of Egyptology & African Studies in Austria, rector of the University of Vienna; discovered Tanis in 1866. He was commemorated with this medal at the time of his retirement. Scharff is described by Forrer as "one of the most celebrated Medallists of modern times" (vol. 5 p.358; listed p.374). Obverse depicts bas-relief of left-facing Jabotinsky with his name and dates of birth and death in Hebrew. On reverse bas-relief of Israel and both banks of the Jordan river, with quotation from Jabotinsky's poem (oddly, laid out from left to right), "This one is ours - and that is as well". The medal is marked "935" and "29 [of the month of] Tammuz 5720 [1960]" on the rim, referencing Jabotinsky's Hebrew date of death in 1940. In BU with luster and lovely patina. Obv.: left facing Andorfer, name below; "Vienna 1906" beneath + Schaefer's name at base. Andorfer (1852- 1912) was a famous numismatist, owner of "Andorfer & Bachmann", vice-president of the Numismatic Society from 1902 to 1905, and helped create a large collection of medals commemorating musicians (bought by Paul Niggl), which formed basis of book he published (1907), "Musica in Nummis". Obverse: left-facing portrait of Salmon with legend in French above. Reverse: image of woman in a sea supporting a man holding a balance. Salmon (1881-1969) was a French poet, art critic and writer; an early defender of Cubism; he may have been Jewish, and ironically prosecuted after World War II for continuing to write for the newspaper 'Le Petit Parisien', which became a pro-Nazi propaganda outlet during the occupation.
