A single-piece construction incorporating the original emblem of the Tel Aviv force of the Hagana. The pin has a screw-back reverse. The Haganah was organized on a geographic basis, so its veteran's organization is similarly structured around the locales where Hagana units were raised. Each veterans unit designed its own pin. Lot 0348a - militaria militaria - Historama SIGNIFICANT JUDAICA Mailbid SaleIsrael: Irgun/Etzel pin commem. 25th anniv.(?) of 'Diaspora Brigade', 1971(?); not maker-marked; size: 21 x 19mm; weight: 1.45g. Depicts Etzel's emblem on rectangular shaded background, w/motto "Rak Kach" ('Only Thus') below; leg. on scroll 'Diaspora 25 Brigade'. Irgun's cells in the Diaspora were est. in 1946 (until Jan. 1949) from volunteers (former soldiers, partisans, Holocaust survivors) who it trained for missions abroad, creating what was then called "the second front" (outside of Palestine); numbered as many as 2000 trained operatives, operating in 21 countries & carried out at least 11 major attacks. Obv.: soldier in '50's-era dress 'charging' forward w/ bayonetted rifle. Rev.: solid back w/safety-pin. The 'Fitness Badge' (formally: 'Badge of Physical Fitness') was awarded in two classes, 'silver', for exceptional performance, and 'bronze' for average performance, in framework of physical fitness test performed during basic training (and also for squad-leader courses & officer courses); test incl. running & obstacle course in full kit. Triangle-shaped, with Irgun emblem and motto "Rak Kakh" ("Only Thus"). Emblem originally designed by Lili (Ayala) Strassman-Lubinsky c. Dec. 1938, reworked by the Revistionist movement's newpaper "HaMashkif" ("The Observer") caricaturist Yoshua Edri, before it officially became the Etzel's symbol. This pin was awarded to soldiers who completed the basic training course for joining such units. Tags bear virtually same information; issued to "Weinstein E # PAL10111 # JEW". The green tag was strung through 1 hole & hung around neck; through 2nd hole, shorter cord strung w/red red tag on it; red tag was retrieved by cutting its string, leaving green tag on body: if body found only with green tag, was understood that soldier's death already reported. Dated to WW1 but ID begins w/"PAL" ('Palestine') as in WW2, & not "RF" ('Royal Fusiliers') as the Palestinian units in WWI were known: soldier may be Pal. resident or in Zion Mule Corps.
