Augustus. Silver Denarius (3.70 g), 27 BC-AD 14. Colonia Caesaraugusta(?), 19/8 BC. CAESAR AVGVSTVS, bare head of Augustus right. Reverse: S P Q R / CL V inscribed in two lines on round shield. RIC 42a; BMC 334; BN 1313; RSC 294. With underlying delicate golden luster. Superb Extremely Fine.

The reverse shows the clipeus virtutis, the shield of valor, decreed to Augustus by the Senate in 27 BC. Like the corona civica, it was awarded for saving the life of a fellow citizen.
