Antoninus Pius. AE As (14.75 g), AD 138-161 Superb EF. Rome, AD 148/9. ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P XII, laureate head of Antoninus Pius right. Reverse: MVNIFICENTIA AVG, COS IIII/S C in two lines in exergue, armored elephant advancing right. RIC 862a. Well struck on a nice full broad flan, Lovely hard dark green patina. Superb Extremely Fine.
The Romans' first experience with elephants was during the Pyrrhic Wars (280-275 BC) against the combined forces of Tarentum and those of Pyrrhus of Epirus. Other than the initial shock and confusion elephants caused to the opposing forces experiencing them for the first time during battle, their military value was largely negligent. In fact, according to numerous ancient sources, they often proved dangerous to the side having them; elephants could be turned by archers and peltasts, as once feeling the sting of dozens of arrows and sling bullets the animals would turn and run amok, rampaging through their own lines causing more harm to their own troops than they ever did to the enemy. This coin whose reverse depicts an armored elephant majestically marching in procession commemorates the benevolence of the emperor, whose role as provider of public spectacles (munera) is captured by the reverse legend, MVNIFICENTIA AVG. While the year this coin was struck, AD 148-149, could have been celebrated as a Roman centenary in which the primary events would have been the centennial games, or ludes saeculares, it seems that Pius did not host them. Instead, he celebrated his decennalia, his tenth year anniversary on the throne. Presumably, the armored elephant depicted here formed part of the military parade through the streets of Rome that would have occurred during Pius' decannalian celebrations. Estimated Value $700 - 800

Aelius. Silver Denarius (3.29 g), Caesar, AD 136-138. EF. Rome, under Hadrian, AD 137. L AELIVS CAESAR, bare head of Aelius right. Reverse TRIB POT COS II, CONCORD in exergue, Concordia seated left, holding patera and resting arm on cornucopiae balanced on side of throne. Cf. RIC 443 (aureus); Strack 398; BMC 1001; RSC 11a. Boldly struck with the portrait in high relief. Extremely Fine.
Overlooking the BM specimen, Mattingly and Sydenham omitted this type when compiling RIC II, which was published in 1926. Four specimens were amongst the coins in the massive 1929 Réka-Devnia Hoard, and perhaps it is for this reason that it was 'rediscovered' by both Strack in his study of Hadrian (1933) and Mattingly in BMC (1936). The type was marginally more common by number of specimens relative to several other types found in Réka-Devnia; however, it remains an elusive rarity for today's specialist of Hadrian's coinage. Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,300

Trajan. AE Sestertius (25.45 g), AD 98-117 Sharpness of EF. Rome, AD 116/7. IMP CAES NER TRAIANO OPTIMO AVG GER DAC PARTHICO P M TR P COS VI P P, laureate and draped bust of Trajan right. Reverse: ARMENIA ET MESOPOTAM[IA IN PO]TESTATEM P R REDACTAE, S C across field, emperor, in military attire, standing right, holding reversed spear and parazonium; at feet to left, Mesopotamia seated right; at feet to right, the river-gods Tigris and Euphrates seated left. RIC 642; Woytek 590v. Rare Armenia-related reverse. Some tooling in the fields. Glossy dark reddish-brown patina. Sharpness of Extremely Fine.
The client kingdom of Armenia served as a strategic buffer state between Rome's wealthy eastern provinces and the vast kingdom of the Parthians to the east. Every couple of generations throughout Roman history, the Parthians either invaded Armenia or installed a client king of their own choosing on its throne, which always prompted a strong response from Rome. In AD 114 during the latter part of Trajan's reign, the Parthians installed their own client king in Armenia. This upset the balance of power that had existed since the conquests of the Roman general Corbulo during Nero's reign. With the region thus destabilized, Trajan intervened militarily, restoring the kingdom as a Roman client state the following year. He then continued on into Parthian territory, even capturing and sacking the Parthian capital of Ctesiphon in 116. The reverse of this coin commemorates these conquests, and shows the emperor in military pose standing amongst the defeated figures of Mesopotamia and the Euphrates and Tigris rivers. Estimated Value $500-UP
