The date and legends are weak but still readable except for LIBERTY, which is faint. Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #84united states half cents |

Lot 96 - united states liberty cap half cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841795 C-6b R6- Plain Edge without Pole G5. Struck over a cut-down Spoiled Large Cent. Sharpness VF15 or a bit better but there is serious damage on the upper right part of the obverse. The damage consists mostly of a shallow blob of metal in the field before the face and myriad scratches in that area that appear to have been applied in a crude, unfocused attempt to remove the blob. There is a void on the rim over the first T in STATES plus additional light contact marks on both sides, none notable. Fortunately the toning is a decent and slightly glossy medium brown and light chocolate. The date is easily readable although the 5 is weakened a bit by a nick, and the legends are mostly strong. This half cent was struck over a cut-down spoiled 1795 large cent of the Sheldon-76 or Sheldon-77 die variety. The 5 and bottom edge of the bust of the large cent is clearly visible under OF, and the hair waves from the cent show clearly above the wreath bow of the half cent reverse. The tip of a stray bust also shows at CA in AMERICA. This piece weighs 91.8 grains, which is heavier than the 84.0-grain standard for plain edge half cents but relatively low for half cents struck on cut-down cent planchets. That suggests this piece was struck on a thin planchet 1795 cent rather than a thicker lettered-edge cent of that same year. While 1795 C-6 half cents are often found struck on planchets cut out of Talbot Allum & Lee Cents, pieces struck on spoiled large cents are much rarer, and pieces with identifiable large cent undertype are extremely rare. Lot 60 - united states colonials - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841787 Fugio Cent Newman 15-K Rarity-6 VG7. A STATES UNITED variety. Sharpness F12 but the left edge of the obverse has been flattened leaving that area rough and obliterating most of FUGIO. The date is strong and the remainder of the legends are clear. The surfaces are decent but not perfectly smooth showing microscopic roughness in protected areas. LDS with strong die clashmarks at the bottom of the reverse. Struck slightly off center to K-8 with the dies in medal orientation, head-to-head, rather than the usual head-to-foot relationship. A decent if imperfect example of this very rare variety. Listed on page 87 in the "Redbook." Weight 144.7 grains. Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #84united states colonials |

Lot 91 - united states liberty cap half cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841795 C-1 R2 Lettered Edge AG3+. Close to G4 but the planchet is covered with microscopic roughness. No verdigris or notable marks. Somewhat glossy olive brown and steel with slightly lighter toning on the devices. The date is weak but readable and the legends are complete except for weakness on HALF CENT. EDS, Manley state 1.0, before any die swelling at AME. The planchet appears very slightly egg-shaped thanks to an incipient planchet clip before the lower half of the neck, as struck. Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Lot 55 - united states colonials - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #84(1792) Washington Born Virginia Cent, Uniface Restrike Baker-22B PCI graded MS63 Red. Lustrous red just starting to fade, about 95% of the red remaining. A tiny nick on the cheek right of the nostril and a spot of dark toning in the dentils over the V in VIRGINIA are the only marks. These uniface restrikes were struck by Albert Collis using transfer dies to help satisfy collector demand. Our grade is consistent with the PCI grade. Listed on page 82 in the "Redbook." Lot 86 - united states liberty cap half cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841794 C-3a R5 G6. Small Edge Letters. Slightly sharper with too many small contact marks for the sharpness grade. The only significant contact marks are a dull nick on the wreath ribbon left of the denominator and another near the rim over ER in AMERICA. There is no corrosion or verdigris. Mostly glossy chocolate brown. The date is strong and the legends are complete and easily readable, although RICA is weak due to an uneven strike on the reverse. A decent lower-grade example of this tough die variety. Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #84united states liberty cap half cents |
