Slightly glossy medium brown fading to chocolate in protected areas. The surfaces are covered with microscopic porosity on all but the highpoints, which are smooth. No verdigris, planchet defects, or contact marks. Basically just a well worn early copper. Struck slightly off center to K-11. The date is off the planchet and much of the legend is unreadable. A rare variety that is missing from many advanced collections. Both dies were used solely in this marriage. Weight 132.9 grains. Listed on page 62 in the "Redbook." Variety with a "Martlet" below King. Attractive glossy reddish chocolate brown with lighter brown toning on the devices. No marks or planchet defects. The only defects are traces of verdigris in protected areas on the king side. Otherwise this piece is choice, especially for a St. Patrick farthing. The "Martlet" or small bird under the King is clear and the brass splasher extends from the crown into the face and chest of the King. Struck over a 1785 Nova Constellatio Crosby 4-D variety. Sharpness VF20 but much of the planchet displays minor roughness and there is a bend at the rim over the I in AUCTORI. Slightly glossy dark olive brown with lighter brown toning on the devices. The dates of the Connecticut (1788) and of the Nova Constellatio (1785) are complete and clear, and "NOVA" also shows clearly off the Mailed Bust. This variety is often found with traces of Nova Constellatio undertype, but seldom do you find one with both dates clearly visible and enough undertype remaining to allow a positive attribution of the host coin.
