Lot 1441 - u.s. coins medals - Archives International Auctions Wall Street Auction #XXI, Sessions 2 and 3Rare Grover Cleveland Indian Peace Medal. 1885. Grover Cleveland Indian Peace medal. Julian IP-46. Oval. Bronze. NGC graded MS 65 BN. 59.0 mm. x 75.0 mm. Lovely chocolate brown surfaces throughout, with none of the usual contact marks or rim bruises usually associated with pieces of this size. The obverse, engraved by Charles Barber, features a portrait of Grover Cleveland based on photos received at the mint in January of 1885. The reverse was engraved by George Morgan. One of the rarest U.S. Mint Indian Peace medal series. Only 30 pieces were struck in bronze, and 10 in silver. John Ford owned one specimen, sold in Ford XVIII for $3,967.50. Stacks sold another example described as VF with small nicks on both sides in their January 12, 2009 American Sale for $4,025.The current example is vastly superior in grade and general overall appearance, and perhaps the finest known.
