Palestine Volunteer Force metal hat badge, circa. 1940-1943; not maker-marked; with slider back; weight: 4.95g; size: 31.5 x 48mm. Depicts patron saint St. George slaying a dragon (i.e. Nazi Germany); known in Heb. as "Kheyl Mitnadvim Ha'Eretz-Israeli", it numbered 2,000 men as home guard force. Formed in Aug. 1940, funded by the Mandate, and based in the 3 main cities, it was open to all British subjects in Palestine & local citizens, tasked with assisting the regular British Army in preparation for war and protecting internal security; there were 2 companies in Jerusalem. In excellent condition, slight bend in field; rare.
