lot # 3558 - roman imperial coinage
Valerian I, AD 253-260. AE Sestertius (18.7g), minted at Rome, c. 256-257. Laureate, cuirassed and draped bust right of Valerian I. Reverse Victory standing left, holding palm. RIC 180; C. 228. Struck on typical squarish flan with dark brown patina. Very Fine.
During the mid AD 3rd century, sestertii became increasingly minted onto squarish or straight-edged planchets. Since these did not fit the circular inscriptions, more and more letters were lost off the flan.
Estimated Value $350 - 400.
Ex Spink, G. Powell Collection (VII 2000), lot 1474.
