Rabbi Nechemya Alter (1875-1942, perished in the Holocaust), the son of the Rebbe of Gur author of 'Sefat Emet', the brother of the Rebbe author of 'Imrei Emet', the father-in-law of the Rebbe author of 'Lev Simcha' and son-in-law of Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Morgenstern of Lomaz-Kock. 

He was known as a Torah and kabbala genius. After World War I, he left the city of Gur and settled in Otwock. In 1925, he immigrated to the Land of Israel and lived in Safed, moving to Jerusalem in 1927 to serve as the head of the 'Sefat Emet' Yeshiva.

In 1931, he returned to Poland and was a member of the "Rabbis Committee" of Lodz. In 1941, he was smuggled out of the Lodz Ghetto to the Warsaw Ghetto. He perished in the Holocaust as did most of his descendants, except for his eldest daughter the Rebbetzen Yutah Henya [the mother of the present Rebbe of Gur].

Remnants of his Torah Novellae were printed in the book "Chidushei Rabbi Nechemya" (Jerusalem, 1983).

הגאון הקדוש רבי נחמיה אלטר (תרל"ה- תש"ב, נספה בשואה), בנו של האדמו"ר מגור בעל "שפת אמת", ואחיו של האדמו"ר בעל "אמרי אמת". חמיו של האדמו"ר בעל "לב שמחה". חתנו של רבי צבי הירש מורגנשטרן מלומאז- מקוצק. נודע כגאון מופלג בנגלה ובנסתר. לאחר מלחמת העולם הראשונה עזב את העיר גור והתיישב באוטווצק. בשנת תרפ"ה עלה ארצה והתיישב בצפת. בשנת תרפ"ז עבר לירושלים וכיהן כראש ישיבת "שפת אמת". בשנת תרצ"א שב לפולין וכיהן כחבר "ועד הרבנים" בלודז'. הוברח בשנת תש"א מגיטו לודז' לגיטו וורשה. נספה בשואה הנוראה. רוב צאצאיו נספו בשואה, מלבד בתו הבכירה הרבנית יוטא הניא [אמו של כ"ק האדמו"ר מגור שליט"א]. שרידים מדברי תורתו נדפסו בספר "חידושי רבי נחמיה" (ירושלים, תשמ"ג).
