TURKEY: Abdul Aziz, 1861-1876, Osmani Nishani order, ND, Order of Osmanie 4th Class, seven-pointed dark green enamel, silver and silver-gilt star with ball-tipped finials and with three short faceted silver rays between each arm, on crescent and five-pointed star suspension; the face with a circular central red enamel medallion bearing a raised silver crescent and inscribed in gilt Arabic letters ‘Relying on the Assistance of Almighty God, Abdül-Azîz Khan, Sovereign of the Ottoman Empire’ within a circular green enamel ring; the reverse with a circular central silver medallion bearing a trophy of arms with crossed standards and drums, an oval plaque above bearing the date ‘699’ (AD1299), the year of the foundation of the Ottoman Empire; with original ribbon and case embossed with golden Tughra on cover with numeral "4" in Arabic, EF.
The Order was instituted on 4 January 1862 by Sultan Abdül-Azîz and became the second highest order of the Ottoman Empire. It was awarded to senior military and civil persons for outstanding meritorious service to the state, originally in three classes, but later, from 1867, in four. Awards to Turkish nationals were limited to 50 members of the first class, 200 of the second, 1000 of the third and 2000 of the fourth at any one time. A lovely example of the Order.

MALDIVE ISLANDS: Imad ad Din IV, 1900-1904, AR 4 laari (2.69g), Mahle, AH1320, KM-40.1 pattern, Schon-4a, Browder-89, pattern for the 4 laari copper coin without the word sana for "year", reeded edge, bold EF, RRR. We have found no example of this item in recent sales. KM has added a pattern type for KM-40.2, which has sana below the date, but Schon lists a silver pattern only for the type without sana, i.e., KM-40.1. I suspect that Schon has attributed it correctly. It was cited by Browder in his 1969 publication.

TURKEY: Mehmet V, 1909-1918, AR medal, AH1339, Hilal-i Ahmer (Red Crescent) Medal, circular silver medal with large decorative suspension bar with the tughra of Sultan Mehmed Reshad V below a white enamel bar inscribed in Arabic letters ‘Ottoman Red Crescent Association’; the face with a circular central white enamel medallion bearing a red enamel left-facing crescent, ornate scrolling to left and right, a laurel spray below and inscribed above in Arabic letters ‘Humane Assistance’; the reverse plain but for decorative scrolled tulips around the edge; with pin for suspension with original ribbon, EF, RRRR.
The medal was instituted in 1903 to reward outstanding meritorious service to the Ottoman Red Crescent Association. The Association was founded on 11 June 1868, at the same time as many Red Cross Societies. The medal was awarded from its inception in 1903 until the establishment of the Turkish Republic in 1923. The medal is hard to find, especially with its suspension and year bars.
