classic head half cents - Coin Auctions
Lot 170 - united states classic head half cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841811 C-1 R6 (with the 4-Star Cud) VF20. Sharpness VF35 but there are numerous fine scratches on the obverse, mostly on the portrait, a rim nick under star 11, and shallow scrapes around HALF CENT. The toning is an attractive glossy medium chocolate brown and the naked-eye appeal of this piece is excellent. Rare TDS, Manley state 5.0, with a large, strong cud break connecting stars 1-4 to the rim. The opposing area at TED-S is depressed and weak thanks to the cud, as always in this die state. There was not enough planchet metal to fill out the designs opposite the deep cud. Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #84united states classic head half cents |

Lot 186 - united states classic head half cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841829 C-1 R1 PCGS Genuine, Unc Details, Cleaning. Mint state sharpness but there are some faint hairlines in the fields on both sides, and these appear to have resulted from an overly-zealous brushing. Otherwise the only marks are a spot of very fine carbon in the hair at the top of the head and another in the field under the chin. Glossy light chocolate and steel brown with hints of very faded red in protected areas. Satiny mint luster covers the protected areas on both sides. MDS. The vertical lines in the H & C in HALF CENT are dull but clearly visible. Our grade is net AU55. Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Lot 181 - united states classic head half cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841828 C-2 R1 12-Star Obverse EF40. Five points sharper but there is a short scratch at the dentils tips above the head. Otherwise this piece is choice. Frosty medium brown with a few subtle wisps of darker olive. Mint luster shows in the protected areas on both sides. MDS, Manley state 2.0. The fine horizontal die line from star 7 to the hair is still visible. Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Lot 160 - united states classic head half cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841809 C-2 R3 VF25. Sharpness VF35 or slightly better but there is a vertical scratch in the field behind the portrait and a lighter scratch on the portrait from the hair above the T in LIBERTY to the chin and slightly beyond into the field. Both scratches are old and blend perfectly into the attractive glossy medium chocolate brown toning. LDS, Manley state 4.0, with die cracks through the stars on both sides of the portrait. This piece has a larger than normal diameter, 24.0 millimeters, and the dentils are weakly struck around both sides giving it the appearance of a broadstruck error. This appearance can also result when the planchet is not properly upset (a process that raises the rims, Breen's stage II of the planchet preparation process) before striking. An interesting half cent. Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #84united states classic head half cents |

Lot 176 - united states classic head half cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841825 C-2 R1 PCGS graded AU55. Very attractive frosty medium brown and light chocolate with traces of lustrous golden tan faded down from mint color in protected areas. Just a hint of friction on the highest points from mint state. The notable marks are a small nick in the middle of the jawline and a subtle splash of slightly darker toning at ATE in STATES. Nicely struck EDS, Manley state 1.0. The end of the wreath stem is sharp, a die state called "very scarce" by Manley. In addition there is a strong vertical bar on the edge between stars 10 & 11, and this bar may have been caused by a break or notch in the restraining collar in the press. This half cent was graded MS60+ by Roger Cohen. Our grade is AU50+, close to AU55. Noyes photo #74355. Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Lot 192 - united states classic head half cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841835 C-1 R1 NGC graded MS63 Brown. Lustrous bluish steel and medium chocolate brown. Satiny mint frost covers the fields and protected areas. The only notable mark is a tiny nick at the lower right point of star 8, and there is a bit of dirt in some of the most-protected areas. E-MDS, Manley state 1.0, with a single set of sharp die clashmarks along the profile. Our grade is MS60. Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Lot 171 - united states classic head half cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841811 C-1 R7 (as a die state) AG3. Several points sharper with many small pits on the obverse, a dull dent on the rim below star 13, and a slightly bent planchet. No verdigris. Cleaned bright with dark steel and olive toning remaining in the protected areas. The date is strong and the legends are complete. Not the most attractive half cent to be sure, but it is in the extremely rare M-LDS, Manley state 4.0, with a bold cud break connecting stars 1 & 2 to the rim. About 7 examples are known with the 2-star cud break, and none of those is in high grade. This is the Missouri Cabinet example of the die state. A very significant die state for the specialist. Lot 187 - united states classic head half cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841831 Proof Original Breen 1-A R7- (as a proof) PCGS graded PR62 Red & Brown. Reddish tan and brown fading to darker bluish steel in protected areas. Ample faded red shows on both sides, probably from a very old cleaning. The fields are nicely reflective but they do show myriad fine hairlines. Very sharply struck. The best identifying marks are a scuff on the leaf tip left of the H in HALF and a tiny boomerang-shaped struck-through line above IC in AMERICA (as struck). The "Accessory E" in the wreath under the E in STATES is bold. Less than a dozen proof strikes are known of these originals plus about 20 circulated pieces that are commonly thought to be business strikes (but that is debatable as some feel all were proof strikes). Our grade is Proof-60. The PCGS label indicates this is a Proof Original strike and mentions the Carvin Goodridge provenance. PCGS population 1; the only example graded at PCGS in Red & Brown (#1187). Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #84united states classic head half cents |
