Moses Tolano (1814-1852; surname misspelled on token) was a Sephardic Jew operating the business on 33 Swan Street, Bridgetown; he issued these tokens for redemption at his shop at the time of emancipation (1834). Founded in Egypt by Italian Jews; retained a storage facility in Jaffo, 1911-1914; began operations in Palestine, 1921; a subsidiary of "British American Tobacco" co.; closed in 1956 & sold brands to "Dubek". Obv. leg: "Tierra Del Fuego 1889" (w/o dots) & name "POP.PER" across granulated field. Rev. leg: "El Paramo # Un Gramo", w/crossed pick & hammer on round granuated field; numbers "AU 864 AG 132" (86.4% gold + 13.2% silver). In BU: some doubling; no test marks visible; KM-TN5. Issued as local currency by Julius Popper (1857-1893), Romanian-Jewish adventurer & French-educated mining engineer, who established El Paramo (the Moor) gold mining settlement on Tierra del Fuego island in 1887, following successful 1886 expedition which yielded gold dust there. The settlement was guarded by small private 'army' outfitted in quasi-Austro-Hungarian uniforms, fending off attacks from Chile & Argentina. Popper's father, Naftali, was headmaster of first modern ('Haskala') Jewish school in Bucharest & founder of the Jewish weekly newspaper 'Di Zait'. Friedenberg comments that Popper's coins "are the only gold coins ever issued by a Jew before the emergence of modern Israel"; JMM p.4-5. Popper died under mysterious circumstances. The "Drom Yehuda" bus cooperative was established in 1931 through a merger of two existing cooperatives, "Darom" and "Yehuda". It operated mainly in the southern part of Israel until 1951 when it merged with two other bus cooperatives to form the present nationwide "Egged" cooperative. Josephs was a convict transported to Australia in 1827, gained his freedom in 1841, and won tender to operate New Town toll gate for 3 years in 1852: issued these 'Toll Gate' tokens to profit from giving change to people passing through his gate.
