Lot 89 - united states liberty cap half cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841794 C-9 R2 High Relief Head PCGS graded AU55. Small Edge Letters. Attractive glossy medium brown and light chocolate offering excellent eye appeal. No roughness or verdigris, and the only notable marks are a very tiny chip on the jaw, two more in the field between the chin and bust, and a small nick at the dentil tips right of the date. Sharply struck LDS, Manley state 3.0. The die crack from the rim through the cap is strong and several dentils left of the fraction are fused by crumbling. The obverse is nicely centered on the defect-free planchet but the reverse is very slightly off center to the bottom leaving shorter dentils under the fraction. A beautiful example of the "High Relief Head" type. Our grade is EF40+. Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #84united states liberty cap half cents |

Sharpness VF20, perhaps a bit better, but cleaned and retoned glossy light chocolate brown with hints of lighter pinkish steel brown toning on the highpoints. No roughness, only a few minor contact marks. The only notable mark is a light scratch arcing across the lower half of the neck. Lot 100 - united states liberty cap half cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841797 C-1 R2 Plain Edge, 1 Above 1 AG3. Double Struck off Center. Glossy medium chocolate brown in protected areas with lighter steel brown toning covering the devices. The planchet is mostly smooth and attractive but there are traces of reddish verdigris around UNITED. Basically just a well-worn half cent. The date is complete and easily readable, including the 1 Above 1 feature, but it is not strong. Double struck. The first strike was 20% off center to K-2 while the second strike was centered on the planchet. Obvious evidence of the first strike shows on both sides, strongest in the field before the bust and along the right edge of the reverse. EDS, Manley state 1.0, prior to swelling on the obverse. Weight 86.7 grains. Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #84united states liberty cap half cents |

Otherwise the planchet is smooth and the toning is a very attractive glossy light to medium chocolate brown. EDS, Manley state 1.0, before any hint of swelling right of the Y in LIBERTY. Struck at least 5% off center to K-9. Weight 78.1 grains. Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #84united states liberty cap half cents |

Lot 90 - united states liberty cap half cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841794 C-9 R2 High Relief Head F12+. Small Edge Letters. Attractive glossy medium chocolate brown with slightly lighter steel brown toning on the highpoints. No corrosion or verdigris, but there is some soft dirt in protected areas. The sharpness is F15 or slightly better but there are a few marks on the reverse. The notable defects are a thin planchet void from over the C in CENT to the right foot of the I in UNITED and a shallow void on the rim between the D in UNITED and the adjacent S in STATES (both as struck but they do catch your eye), plus a rim bruise at the I in AMERICA. The obverse is choice. LDS, Manley state 3.0, with a dull but clear die crack from the rim through the cap to the hair where it fades away. The date and legends are complete and clear. Lot 85 - united states liberty cap half cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841794 C-2a R2+ VG8. Small Edge Letters. Sharpness VF20, even better on the obverse, but the planchet is covered with very fine roughness, strongest on the lower left quadrant of the reverse. No marks or verdigris. The date and legends are complete and easily readable except for weakness caused by corrosion at the fraction and NIT in UNITED. Slightly glossy dark steel with lighter chocolate toning on the highpoints. Rare EDS, Manley state 1.0, with no die clashmarks. Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Lot 96 - united states liberty cap half cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841795 C-6b R6- Plain Edge without Pole G5. Struck over a cut-down Spoiled Large Cent. Sharpness VF15 or a bit better but there is serious damage on the upper right part of the obverse. The damage consists mostly of a shallow blob of metal in the field before the face and myriad scratches in that area that appear to have been applied in a crude, unfocused attempt to remove the blob. There is a void on the rim over the first T in STATES plus additional light contact marks on both sides, none notable. Fortunately the toning is a decent and slightly glossy medium brown and light chocolate. The date is easily readable although the 5 is weakened a bit by a nick, and the legends are mostly strong. This half cent was struck over a cut-down spoiled 1795 large cent of the Sheldon-76 or Sheldon-77 die variety. The 5 and bottom edge of the bust of the large cent is clearly visible under OF, and the hair waves from the cent show clearly above the wreath bow of the half cent reverse. The tip of a stray bust also shows at CA in AMERICA. This piece weighs 91.8 grains, which is heavier than the 84.0-grain standard for plain edge half cents but relatively low for half cents struck on cut-down cent planchets. That suggests this piece was struck on a thin planchet 1795 cent rather than a thicker lettered-edge cent of that same year. While 1795 C-6 half cents are often found struck on planchets cut out of Talbot Allum & Lee Cents, pieces struck on spoiled large cents are much rarer, and pieces with identifiable large cent undertype are extremely rare. Lot 91 - united states liberty cap half cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841795 C-1 R2 Lettered Edge AG3+. Close to G4 but the planchet is covered with microscopic roughness. No verdigris or notable marks. Somewhat glossy olive brown and steel with slightly lighter toning on the devices. The date is weak but readable and the legends are complete except for weakness on HALF CENT. EDS, Manley state 1.0, before any die swelling at AME. The planchet appears very slightly egg-shaped thanks to an incipient planchet clip before the lower half of the neck, as struck. Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Lot 86 - united states liberty cap half cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841794 C-3a R5 G6. Small Edge Letters. Slightly sharper with too many small contact marks for the sharpness grade. The only significant contact marks are a dull nick on the wreath ribbon left of the denominator and another near the rim over ER in AMERICA. There is no corrosion or verdigris. Mostly glossy chocolate brown. The date is strong and the legends are complete and easily readable, although RICA is weak due to an uneven strike on the reverse. A decent lower-grade example of this tough die variety. Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #84united states liberty cap half cents |

Lot 97 - united states liberty cap half cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841796 C-2 R4 With Pole PCGS Genuine AU Details Scratch. Very attractive frosty medium chocolate and light olive brown with traces of lighter brown and tan toning in protected areas. No spots, stains, or planchet defects. Looks choice to the unaided eye, but a glass reveals a half dozen hairline scratches meandering through the obverse fields, all blending perfectly into the very attractive toning. The reverse is flawless. The fields are smooth and slightly reflective suggesting this piece was struck early in the die marriage. Our grade is EF40 sharpness net VF30. A very impressive example of the date in spite of the imperfections. And it comes with a long, very impressive provenance. Weight 84.2 grains. Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc.
