lot # 94 - united states liberty cap half cents
1795 C-4 R3 Punctuated Date VF20 with Planchet Flaw. Thin Planchet. Glossy chocolate and medium brown mixed with reddish chocolate tones on the obverse. There are a few faint, insignificant hairline scratches on the cap and traces of soft verdigris in a few of the protected areas on the obverse, but overall the surfaces and eye appeal of this piece are quite nice. However it was struck on a defective planchet that has an obvious void that touches the top of the L in LIBERTY and a less-obvious void affecting the dentils over BER (both as struck). The date is bold and the punctuation (comma) following the 1 is strong. LDS, Manley state 2.0. There is an obvious bulge in the field before the portrait and weakness in the center of the reverse, as usual in all but the earliest die state. A nice example of the popular "Punctuated Date" type and a neat mint error. Weight 86.5 grains.
Estimated Value $500-UP.
