Uniform - Hussar Attila Tunic. A fine late Victorian period attributed 4th Hussars Officers laced 'Attila' tunic. A fine & highly elaborate example of fine black melton wool with full guilt bullion Austrian knots & toggles to the chest & gilt bullion lace to the reverse. Full gilt bullion lace facings to the collar & cuffs appropriate to the field. Complete with guilt bullion officers cap lines. The Shoulder boards each with a QVC for the rank of Major. Original tailors label in collar with name & rank of owner Major Starkey. There are 3 or 4 small moth holes at back that are hard to see on the black wool, gold silken interior lining intact but tattered needing repair, leather interior waist belt needs resewing. Alternating hook front closures all remain. In remarkable condition overall. Major Lewis Edward Starkey. Lewis Edward Starkey was commissioned into the 4th Hussars in 1881. A summary of his service is: 23 Apr 1881 Cornet, 01 Jul 1881 Lieutenant, 17 Dec 1887 Captain, 13 May 1896 Major, 02 Mar 1898 Retires on retired pay, (LG 01 Mar 1898 pg1872), 03 Feb 1900 Lieutenant (LG 02 Feb 1900 pg692), 03 Feb 1900 Captain 3rd Imperial Yeomanry (LG 28 Dec 1900 pg8755), 10 Sep 1901 MID, 3rd Bn Imperial Yeomanry (LG 10 Sep 1901 pg5963), 27 Sep 1901 Lt-Col in Reserve of Officers (LG 27 Sep 1901 pg6306), 1918 Re-employed Ministry of National Serv (Army List Nov 1918 pg2743). War Service Egypt 1882: Battle of Tel el Kebir attached to 4th Dragoon Guards, (medal with clasp, bronze star), Boer War: Served with Imperial Yeomanry, slightly wounded, mentioned in despatches (LG 10 Sep 1901), promoted Lieutenant Colonel in Reserve of Officers. WW1: Re-employed Ministry of National Service (no medals). (P)
