1c Bronze on Lilac, acid tied at top center beside 3c rose 1861 tied by Philadelphia black octagon cds dated September 22, 1861 and Blood's black double line cds dated September 27, 1861. Addressed to "James C. Hufty/Company C. Col.Bakers/Regiment/Camp Advance/Fairfax County/Va."
Red, white and blue flag at left (same design as Walcott #2978) with the following:
"We must keep that Flag where it e'er has stood
In front of the Free, the Wise, and the Good!
And fight and fall, at our Country's call.
To defend the Flag of the people!"
Colonel Baker's California Regiment was really a Philadelphia regiment since most of it's men came from there. It latter became the 71st Pennsylvania Volunteers.
With PF Cert which states, "SINGLES, ON PATRIOTIC COVER TO SOLDIER AT CAMP ADVANCE, FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA; LOCAL ACID CANCELLED, 3c WITH 1861 PHILADELPHIA TOWN CANCEL. AND BLOODS DATESTAMP. AND WE ARE OF THE OPINION THAT IT IS A GENUINE USAGE, THE STAMP WITH A VERTICAL CREASE AT UPPER LEFT; THE COVER WITH AN EDGE SPLIT AT TOP RIGHT. "
