lot # 4045 - brit. colonies trinidad u. tobago
1859 (May 9): 1 s. indigo, imperforate, a used example with good to large margins all round and portion of adjoining stamp at base, overlapping 1857 1 d. rose-red imperforate, on 1859 cover from Port of Spain to Baltimore, USA tied by "1" numeral obliterators and by "STEAMSHIP / 10" (cents) charge mark of arrival. Manuscript '4' inter-island credit in red at left and faint "♚ / PAID / AT / TRINIDAD" in red. Reverse with double arc 'Trinidad' cds of despatch (Oct 10) and small 'St. Thomas' cds (Oct 15). The stamps have been lifted, pressed and reaffixed, the cover patched within and refolded, however the 1 s. indigo is very rare on letter, especially such a fine example, and a most unusual franking.
