TALPIYOTH MM 22/16/1950 ties full tabbed pair of 5 mil Festivals (2nd pmk ties 20 mil Doar Ivri) to regist cvr (r-label: Jerusalem 20, number 0016), addressed to Petach Tikvah, backstamped. M.M. is the contraction for ‘Mahane Ma'avar", that is, Transit Camp. One of the largest transit camps for immigrants, particularly those from North Africa and other Arab states, was situated in the suburb of Talpiyoth in what today is the Industrial Area, adjacent to the Beit Safafa village. The postal agency was opened in the camp on October 2nd, 1950. The agency was closed at the end of 1958; at that time the need for the camp had ceased. The first postmark is one of the rarities of the State. (From The Postal Riston: of Jerusalem From 1948, By Emanual Glassman, 1978).
