Henry Laurens. 1724-1792, 2nd President of the Continental Congress of the United States (November 1, 1777 to December 9, 1778), South Carolina Member of Continental Congress, captured by British in 1780 and confined in Tower of London, exchanged for General Cornwallis. Manuscript "On Public Service, Henry Laurens" free frank endorsement as President of the Continental Congress on address leaf to Caesar Rodney, Governor & Commander in Chief of the State of Delaware, endorsed "Recommend to General Smallwood, Wilmington", integral ALS datelined "York Town, 28 April 1778" and signed "Henry Laurens, President of Congress"; light staining, Fine.

Letter reads, "I had the honour of conveying through the hands of Gen Smallwood the 24th Inst. a packet directed to Your Excellency containing 12 Copies of an Act of Congress of the 22d Inst. The present cover with present copies of an Act dated the 23d for granting pardons & recommending to the several States to enact Laws or issue Proclamations adated to the good purposes…".
