Islands off Ionia, Samos. Silver Tetradrachm (14.64 g), ca. 408/4-380/66 BC EF. Hegemon(eos?), magistrate. Facing lion's scalp. Reverse: ΣA, forepart of bull right; to left, laurel branch; above, magistrate's name: HΓHMΩN; all within shallow incuse square. Barron class X, -; HGC 6, 1218. Underlying luster present, lightly toned. Rare The impressive lion's scalp well struck in high relief. Extremely Fine/ Very Fine.
The magistrate is recorded by neither Barron nor Hoover. Hoover erroneously lists a magistrate by the name of HΓHMΩNEOΣ, but this is actually the patronymic of AΛKMEΩN (Barron class X, 152) and should not have been recorded as a separate magistrate. It is, of course, entirely possible that the magistrate Hegemon(eos?) seen here is the father of the (later) magistrate Alkmeon. Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,500
