Später war er bei der Baltimore & Ohio, Illinois Central, Union Pacific und Central Pacific aktiv. In der Folgezeit verlor er die Schlacht mit James Hill um die Northern Pacific. Harriman gilt als der letzte große Eisenbahn-Tycoon der US-Geschichte. Harriman is considered the last big railroad tycoon in US history.
