Receipts of the Rebbetzen of Salant and the Rebbetzen Bardeki given for their Membership in the "Aid Society" of the German Jews – Signatures of Dr. Paul Nathan and Efrayim Cohen – 1907

One of the documents was given to the Rebbetzen H. Salant and the other to the Rebbetzen A. Bardeki, whose names are handwritten on the documents. 1907. Hebrew and English.

The Rebbetzen H. Salant is most likely the Rebbetzen Haya Salany (1839-1920), the fourth wife of Rabbi Shmuel Salant, the rabbi of Jerusalem.

The Aid Society was active during the early 20th century to assist the Jews of Eastern Europe and the land of Israel abd promote the German culture among the Jews outside of Germany.

Efrayim Cohen Reiss (1863-1943) established the first Hebrew school system in the Land of Israel. He studied at 'Etz Chaim'. Served as the principal of the 'Lemel' school. Was one of the founders of the 'Bnei Brit' Association. He was a relative of the Salant family and of other families of the zealots of Jerusalem; therefore, his school was not banned. In 1903, he became the director of the Aid Society. His house served as center for the intellectuals of Jerusalem.

Paul Nathan (1857-1927) was a Jewish-German journalist, politician and philanthropist who established and headed the Aid Society of the German Jews. He acted for the Jews of the world and especially the Jewish Yishuv of the Land of Israel and was one of the founders of the Technion of Haifa. He was also known for the monetary assistance he gave the Torah institutions of the Land of Israel.

אחד המסמכים ניתן לרבנית ה. סלאנט [H. Salant] והשני לרבנית א. ברדקי [A. Bardeki], אשר שמותיהן כתובים בכתב יד במסמכים. תרס"ז 1907. עברית ואנגלית.

ככל הנראה מדובר ברבנית חיה סלאנט (1839 תקצ"ט - 1920 תר"פ), זוגתו (בנישואין רביעיים) של מרן רבי שמואל סלאנט רבה של ירושלים,

ועד העזרה פעל בראשית המאה ה-20 לסיוע פילנתרופי ליהודי מזרח אירופה וארץ ישראל ולקידום התרבות הגרמנית בקרב היהודים מחוץ לגרמניה.

אפרים כהן רייס (תרכ"ג 1863- תש"ג 1943) הקים את מערכת בתי הספר העברית הראשונה בארץ ישראל. למד ב'עץ חיים'. כיהן כמנהל בית הספר 'למל'. ממייסדי אגודת 'בני ברית'. היה קשור משפחתית למשפחת סלאנט ולמשפחות הקנאים בירושלים, ומשום כך לא הוטל חרם על בית הספר שבראשותו. היה מקורב לרבי שמואל סלאנט. ב- 1903 קיבל על עצמו את ניהול "חברת עזרה". ביתו היה מרכז למשכילי ירושלים.

פאול נתן (1857 תרי"ז- 1927 תרפ"ז) עיתונאי, פוליטיקאי ופילנטרופ יהודי-גרמני, שהקים ועמד בראש "עזרה" - חברת עזרה של יהודי גרמניה. פעל רבות בסיוע ליהודי העולם, ובמיוחד ליישוב היהודי בארץ ישראל, והיה בין מקימי הטכניון בחיפה. כן נודע בעזרתו למוסדות התורה בארץ.
