Austrian Post Office in Smirna 1890: 1 pi. ultramarine, a horizontal pair used on 11 Janauary 1896 registered cover from Smirna to Boston, USA (Jan 26) where at least three attempts were made at delivery: the first with pencil "unknown", the second with "Try 125th North Street", handstamped "Third Notice / Feb 4 1896" in violet and circular "REC'D IN BAD CONDITION", thence transferred to the Dead Letter Office (March 2) for return via Vienna where re-opened and sealed at edges with "Recommandirt Briefe / Wien" reseals and returned to Smirna (March 28). 15 handstamps noted on a remarkable usage.
