Greek Post Office in Smirna 1919 (May 18): Stampless cover from newly occupied Smirna to Metelino showing framed "EΛΛ. TAXYΔP. YΠHEΣIΛ / EN / ΣMYPNH / ATEΛEΣ" handstamp in black and reverse with Metelino arrival cds (May 18). An extremely rare cover.
Note: The Greek invasion was on 15th May 1919, a Greek Field Post Office was opened on the same day. The Civil Post Office did not open until 20th May 1919. For 5 days Greek civilians and businesses were able to send letters free via the Military Post, letters received the handstamp shown above.
