lot # 8240 - bavaria stamps
18 Kreuzer yellow-orange, large margins on all sides, together with 12 Kreuzer red, at bottom cut close- otherwise full to over-margined upper right corner margin, with open Mühlrad-cancel "325" and oblong stamp "MÜNCHEN 21 FEB. 1860" on complete folded cover without routing mark, carried via France to Philadelphia, with upward landing cancellation. The letter was underfranked by 3 crosses for this route, but still used with "P.D.". In Strasbourg "T. F." and "21" (US cents = 33 crosses) used and forwarded wide without objection. A "3" noted next to the despatch datestamp was possibly interpreted as a partial franco paid in cash. A rather inconspicuous letter fold runs through the 12 crosses. An interesting and perhaps unique transatlantic letter in this form.
