Carter served in the Navy during World War II and then ran the family peanut business. He was Governor of Georgia before he defeated Ford for the Presidency. During his Presidency, he signed the Panama Canal Treaty, assisted in the Camp David accords, pardoned draft evaders, and called for human rights around the world. His downfall came with the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, a struggling economy, and the Iranian hostages. He was easily defeated by Reagan in 1980.
