1856 Lieutenant Governor Edward Macarthur Medal for Military & Civil Merit. Also to commemorate the Volunteer movement in Australia. It did not get past the pattern stage. AE, 33mm. Designed by Ludwig Becker, dies cut by Julius Hogarth & struck at the Sydney Mint. Forrer incorrectly considered it a pattern for an Australian ½d. In 2008 Les Carlisle correctly published as C-1856/1. Mintage 6 in gold, 6 in silver & 12 in copper making a total of 24 in all metals, struck at the Royal Mint, Sydney. Only one other bronze & one silver having been seen in recent decades. aUNC. Extremely Rare. Ex John Beagle & Dave Allen collections. It is amazing that we are able to offer 2 examples of the extremely rare medal in this auction (P)
