Lot 430 - united states draped bust cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841807 S-271 R1 "Comet" Obverse F15+. Five points sharper but there are several small rim bruises or dull rim nicks on each side, the largest of these left of the L in LIBERTY. The surfaces are mostly smooth but a glass reveals traces of verdigris on each side. Rather glossy chocolate brown and steel with steel brown toning on the devices. Impressive M-LDS, Breen state VI, Iskra state IV. The "Comet" flaw behind the head is bold and the other linear die flaws in the obverse fields and across the neck are clear. Slightly glossy mix of chocolate and steel brown mixed with tan from a light cleaning. Uniform fine roughness covers the planchet but there are no marks or verdigris. The date is weak but easily readable. Most of the legends remain visible but a few letters are weak. Rare M-LDS, Breen state III, with a cud break at RTY but no cud at MERIC. Glossy light to medium chocolate brown with areas of darker chocolate toning on both sides, mostly on the reverse. No roughness or verdigris. The only marks are some fine scratches on the upper part of the reverse, mostly in the field at D-S and at ES-OF-A. LDS, Breen state V. There are strong die cracks along the profile into the field, and the field between two of these cracks is clearly raised as a retained cud. A neat die state. Our grade is VF35 sharpness net VF25+. Sharpness VF20 but covered with uniform light to moderate roughness under slightly glossy dark olive brown toning. No verdigris, and the only mark of any significance is a short dig in the field before the neck. MDS, Breen state II late. The die failure on the obverse is strong and swelling nearly obliterates STATES. Otherwise the date and legends are complete and clear. Looks better than the net grade might imply. Five points sharper but there is a fine scratch from the top of the hair ribbon to the throat. Otherwise only tiny contact marks of no significance. Glossy dark chocolate brown and steel with traces of frosty lighter reddish brown toning in some of the protected areas, especially on the right side of the reverse. LDS, Breen state III, with a large, strong cud break connecting RICA to the rim. The strike is uneven, strong on the right sides and weaker on the left sides, a result of the die faces being out of proper parallel alignment. Variety with E over Inverted E in AMERICA. Rather glossy medium chocolate brown and steel mixed with hints of reddish chocolate brown toning on the reverse. No corrosion, only minor contact marks consistent with the grade. The notable marks are a light rim bruise under the 1 in the denominator and an old pin scratch at the dentil tips over TED in UNITED. EDS, Breen state I. The date and legends are strong and the E over Inverted E feature is obvious. Removed from a PCGS slab graded VF30 (PCGS label #1434.30/22027917 included).
