lot # 225 - united states large cents
1793 S-5 R4 Wreath Cent with Large Date & LIBERTY Basal State-1 Counterstamped. Variety with a Vine & Bars Edge. Not much of the designs remain visible but the leaves over the date and parts of the top of the head and LIBERTY are present (although weak), and a few elements on the reverse can be made out with some effort. Portions of the Vine & Bars Edge device remain visible as well. Fortunately enough remains to make a positive attribution. Slightly glossy dark steel brown and chocolate. There is what appears to be a deep planchet void where the left half of the date should be. This piece was counterstamped J.STAPLETON across the obverse and "1858" was carefully hand-engraved above the counterstamp. This piece is shown in the Brunk reference as S-862, and it appears to be the same piece Brunk used to make the listing.
Estimated Value $200-UP.
