Auction 333-341 Nigeria, Cameroon, Sudan & Worldwide Postal History - Day 4

1860/61: 1 d. deep blue, 1st retouch with cornucopia on white ground, a horizontal pair used on 1862 entire letter to Lima endorsed "por Vapor", the adhesives with part sheet margin at right, tied by TRUJILLO cds's (May 5) in black. Lima arrival cds (May 9) on reverse. The pair roughly separated but a most attractive entire.

1867: ½ r. deep blue, a horizontal pair used on 1 January 1872 entire letter from San Miguel to the Italian Consul in Guatemala City, cancelled by unclear dotted obliterator handstamp in black. Fresh appearance, an extremely rare issue on letter - this item believed to be unique with the ½ real usage. Signed E. Diena.

"El Sol de Mayo" 1856 (Oct 1): Carrier 60 c. blue, thin figures, a fine example with three complete margins and just touched at base (position 19), used on 29 September 1858 entire letter from San José to Ramon Duranona in Montevideo with the adhesive just tied by two small pen strokes over the lower left corner. File fold but a rare usage on full entire, R. A. Siegel / Walter Britz census #1-COV-35 of the 37 covers recorded. Rare. Signed...

"El Sol de Mayo" 1856 (Oct 1): Carrier 60 c. deep blue, thin figures, a fine example with staining around the edge of the margins when adhered to the 19 January 1857 entire letter from Rafael Rodriguez in Durazno to Francisco Corta in Montevideo, endorsed "con un fardito" (with a package). The stamp with manuscript cancellation "Claudio el orio" (?) in a very deep indigo shade showing the "Cracked Plate" variety with crack running from NE...

"El Sol de Mayo" 1856 (Oct 1): Carrier 1 real vermilion, a very fine example of excellent colour (position 21), good margins on two sides, shaved as usual on the other two sides, neatly tied to small piece by manuscript pen cross in black ink. Less than five examples are recorded on piece (two were housed in the "Concordia" collection) and very fine for this rare stamp Scott = $ 400.

1859 (Jan 1): Medio (½) real yellow on cream paper, fine impression, a used example, large margins all round and sheet marginal at left, used on 23 February 1859 entire letter from (Villa de) Cura to Caracas cancelled by two strikes of the "O" weight marking in brownish-black ink. An extremely rare stamp in this shade and a rare early usage. Signed Calves, A. Diena, Holcombe Scott = $ 3'000.

1859 (Jan 1): 1 reales deep blue on cream paper, fine impression, sheet marginal at top and separated by hand at base, used on somewhat toned 7 May 1861 cover to Caracas cancelled by two strikes of six pointed "Star" handstamps in black. 1849 (July 28): 20c blue Épaulette, good margins all around, tied to cover to Ruremonde (Roermond) by "24" barred numeral, further struck with Brussels cds in blue, "N" notation adjacent stamp denoting adhesive disallowed as its usage contravened the Belgian-Dutch Postal Convention, manuscript "35" tax mark in black, red cds arrival backstamp, a fine franking and rare usage, being only one of two recorded examples of an Épaulette franking...

1864 (March 8): Cover from Copenhagen to the Hague franked with 1855 2 sk. blue, 1857 8 sk. green and 1866 4 sk. red, the imperforates with four ample margins, tied by "1" numeral cancel, light Copanhagen cds, "3" in blue manuscript indicating the silbergroschen value of the affixed 14 skilling franking, underpaid and struck with dual boxed "Unzureichend Frankiert" in black and blue, "40" in black denoting amount due from recipient, no credit...

1868 (June 11): Cover from Copenhagen to Amsterdam, franked with 1864-8 2 sk. blue, 4 sk. red and 8 sk. bistre, all cancelled with railway cds, reverse with red Amsterdam receiver (June 13), light filing folds, 2 sk. with some light discoloration, else a fine three-colour franking.
