lot # 4775 - fiji
1915/19: "WAR STAMP" 1 d. bright scarlet from Plate 5, an unused horizontal pair, marginal from right of sheet, right hand stamp variety "Overprint Omitted", hinged for protection, fresh and very fine, large part og. Extremely rare Gi = £ 5'500.
Provenance: Harmers, London, 8 July 1999, lot 937.
Note: Just 10 examples of this error can exist. The interpanneau panes of 60 were surcharged in Suva at the same time. On one sheet from Plate 5, the overprint was shifted to the left, leaving one "WAR STAMP" overprint in the left margin, stamp six showing "WAR S" and stamp 12 with "WAR STAMP" entirely omitted. Only three complete interpanneau strips are still 'in situ' in their original strips of twelve, one in the "Besançon" Collection, one ex the Peter Robertson collection from the base of sheet with Plate Number 5 (lot 203) and the top horizontal row of the sheet is housed in the collection of Her Majesty King Charles III.
