ARAB-SASANIAN: Mu'awiya, 661-680, AR drachm (4.10g), DA (Darabjird), year 43 (frozen), A-14, actually struck AH52-54, the first issue to bear the name of a caliph, as commander of the believers, bold VF to EF.

ARAB-SASANIAN: Salm. b. Ziyad, ca. 680-685, AR drachm (2.26g), AYPTAK, AH64, A-18, SICA-43, clipped down to later standard, VF, RRR. This mint name has been tentatively associated with Itak, the district around the city of Abivard, now on the border between Iran and Turkmenistan. All known coins of this mint are year 64 issues of Salm b. Ziyad. Possibly from the same reverse die as SICA-43.

ARAB-BYZANTINE: Standing Emperor, ca. 650s, AE square fals (3.82g), "NKIO", A-3504, Foss, p.32, "emperor" holding 2 long crosses, retrograde E left, right character off flan / cross above cursive m, symbols left & right, mint name below, Fine to VF, RR. A very similar piece, struck on a more-or-less round flan, appeared in our Auction 19 (Lot 180), but it is extremely rare on a square planchet.

The countermark is almost identical to the mark on standard Arab-Byzantine Scythopolis folles published by Amitai-Preiss, Berman & Qedar in INJ volume 13 (type A9a). This is first example we have seen with the tayyib countermark on a standard follis of...
