1870: Stampless folded cover, struck with blue oval sender's cachet "VICTOR BARRERE / BATHURST / RIVIERE GAMBE / COTE OCCIDENTALE D'AFRIQUE", rated 7d. in manuscript postmarked with red GAMBIA c.d.s. (30 Dec), to Bordeaux, France,. endorsed "p. Athenian" and conveyed via London (15 Jan) and Calais (15 Jan), next-day c.d.s. arrival backstamp, fine and scarce. The 4d. and 6d. adhesives were issued in March, 1869, but the 7d. rate could continue to be prepaid in cash until 1880.
