Late Mail 1878: 8 c. on 2 d. pale blue and 17 c. on 4 d. rose (two examples), used on 1881 entire letter at single rate from Port Louis to Lormont, France all tied by "B53" obliterators in black and by "Modane a Paris" cds of transit in red (March 20). Rated at 17 c. for a single letter + 25 c. for Late Fee, carried on the Ligne T Paquebot "Dupleix" with octagonal "POSS. AN. / PAQ. FR. T No. 1" datestamp (Feb 22) in red (Salles fig. 1898) to Aden, thence via "Iraquaddy" to Naples. Reverse with "Mauritius" code A despatch cds in black (Feb 22) and Lormont arrival (March 21). A fine Late Fee usage and most attractive.
Note: Late Fee regulations remained similar under decimalisation which scheduled the Late Fee surcharge as follows: between 2 and 2.30 pm = 25 c., 2.30 and 3.00 pm = 50 c. and between 4.00 and 4.30 pm the enormous charge of 2 rupees 50 c. was due.
