lot # 1278 - PH: 1967 War era Arab-Israeli mail

Tuesday Apr 09, 2019 20:00 Asia/Jerusalem

1967 Six Day War postal suspensions of mail to Israel: 22-6-1967 airmail cover from GENEVA to JERUSALEM "JORDAN", franked 60c & tied by strike of local postmark; as of 7 June locale part of Israel: although the War & territorial changes did not cause international mail suspensions, much worldwide mail addressed to Jordan was held up there; here, the Swiss uniquely marked such addressed mail with "Service Postal Suspendu" instructional marking handstamp & returned it to sender; this cover resent (front-stamped 1-7-67 - important proving date that the suspension ended prior to this date, just a week after first dispatch attempt) once it was re-addressed "via ISRAIL" (with "Jordan" crossed off), whereupon local Post Office crossed off the instructional marking - an extremely rare instance of official "no service" mail in this war, with only 2 such covers known. Opened roughly at left.
