1837 inwards cover from England to "Lieut Christie, 80th Regt.", 'PAID SHIP LETTER/(crown)/10FEB/1837/LONDON' oval datestamp in red, crown oval 'GENERAL POST OFFICE/JU (?)/SYDNEY' arrival datestamp in black. [In 1836 the 80th Regiment was given the duty of escorting convicts to Australia. The regiment spent seven years in NSW with detachments being stationed on Norfolk Is & New Zealand. In August 1836 Lieut Christie took command of 29 men to guard 269 convicts on board the Bengal Merchant which arrived in Port Jackson Sydney in December 1836]
