Mit dem Erlös aus dem Verkauf der Zertifikate wurde die Aufforstung Israels finanziert. Der Jüdische Nationalfonds, auf Hebräisch Keren Kayemet Le-Israel wurde 1901 in Basel (Schweiz) von Johann Kremenezky auf Initiative und im Auftrag von Theodor Herzls als Wegbereiter des jüdischen Staates gegründet. Bis ins Jahr 1948 betrieb der Jüdische Nationalfonds Landerwerb für jüdische Siedler im damals noch britischen Mandatsgebiet Palästina. Hierbei wurde er von den jüdischen Gemeinden in aller Welt unterstützt. Seit der Gründung des Staates Israel engagiert sich der Jüdische Nationalfonds vor allem bei der Kultivierung des Landes. Bis heute wurden mit Hilfe des Jüdischen Nationalfonds 220 Millionen Bäume gepflanzt.
