lot # 255 - united states liberty cap cents
1794 S-47 R4 VF25. Sharper by at least 5 points with smooth, very attractive surfaces, but there are a few light contact marks. The notable ones are a light rim bruise under the lowest curl, some tiny ticks in the field before the portrait, and a collection of faint pin scratches in the hair left of the earlobe. In addition there is a very shallow low spot at the dentil tips off the tip of the lowest curl and a similar low spot at the dentil tips above the I in LIBERTY, most likely a result of some debris on the die. The reverse is essentially flawless. Choice glossy light chocolate brown with excellent eye appeal. LDS, Breen state III, with all the fine die cracks on the reverse described by Breen. In addition there is a double profile on the forehead, nose, and lips of Ms Liberty plus similar doubling on LI in LIBERTY and the 179 in the date. Breen says the doubling at LI is from repunching in the die but he does not mention the similar doubling seen elsewhere on this cent. The reverse is not rotated as often seen on this variety. Certainly a high condition census example of this tough variety. The finest is an EF45 example impounded in the ANS, and the next best grades VF30. A great opportunity for a serious collector of 1794 cents.
Estimated Value $10,000-UP.
