lot # 402 - united states draped bust cents
1803 S-248 R4 VF25. A "Mumps" variety. Five points sharper but there are a few light, old scratches from the face near the eye into the hair at the left, all blended perfectly into the toning. In addition there is a dull diagonal nick under the curl on the neck, a small horizontal nick on the front edge of the neck, and a small collection of pinpricks near the dentils left of the denominator. Glossy light olive brown and chocolate. The eye appeal of this cent is excellent in spite of the minor marks. Nicely struck EDS, Breen state I. The "Mumps" break at the throat is strong, the Doubled Fraction Bar is clear, and the reverse is uncracked. A very nice example of this tough variety, and it comes with an interesting provenance.
Estimated Value $2,000-UP.
