lot # 3119 - ancient greek coins
Sikyonia, Sikyon. Silver Stater (12.25 g), ca. 335-330 BC. ΣE below, chimaera prowling left; above, wreath above. Reverse: Dove flying left; before, A; all within wreath. BCD Peloponnesos 220 (same obv. die); SNG Copenhagen -. An incredible gem example. Lustrous. Mint State.
This beautiful Sikyon stater comes from the very last issue, and should probably be connected with Alexander's appeal for mercenaries from the Peloponnese in 334 BC. All of the staters from this issue have a wreath on the obverse, and the letters N, I or A on the reverse. Of the three letter varieties, those with the letter A are the least common.
Estimated Value $5,000-UP.
