lot # 3193 - ancient greek coins
Judaea City Coinage. Akko-Ptolemais. Geta. Æ 18 (6.01 g), as Caesar, 198-209 CE. Ca. 211/2 CE. L S GET C AVG PII F, bare-headed, draped and cuirassed bust of Geta right. Reverse: C-O-L PTOL, founder plowing right with yoked ox and heifer; in background dividing legend, four standards. Cf. Kadman, Akko 150-2 (obv. legend); Meshorer, City-Coins -; cf. Rosenberger 62 (same); cf. Rouvier 1025 (same). Very Rare. Lovely dark green and earthen patina. Extremely Fine.
Munsterberg, "Die Kaisernamen der romischen Kaisermunzen," NZ 59 (1926), p. 63, records this unusual legend at one other mint, Sebaste in Samaria. None of the standard references for the coinage of Ake-Ptolemais record it, however, citing instead the obverse legends P SEPT GETA C or P SEPT GETA CAES. One other specimen is known (Gemini VI, 10 January 2010, 682), which shares the obverse die with our coin.
Estimated Value $400 - 600.
