Auction 333-341 Europe & Overseas Americas (North, Central & South America) - Day 1

1832 (Dec 4): Entire letter from Maranhão to Lisbon endorsed "Galèra Luiz", struck with superb oval "MARANHAO" handstamp in black (P-MA-06) in black, with italic oval "C. Est. de N." applied on arrival (Correio Estrangeiro de Navio) and rated "160" reis due, both in red. Superb and rare thus.

1843: Bull's Eyes 60 r. black, two unused examples, one with part gum, both four margins, good colour, one has a small tear in right side which is not obvious, the other has three small thins to reverse and two tiny nicks into base, otherwise a fine duo with great eye appeal, scarce Scott = $1'650. 1844/46: Inclinados: 60 r. black on yellowish paper, Type I, unused, no gum, with good to large margins all round, strong colour, crisp printing, slight toning, otherwise fine and rare. Type I unused examples are exceptionally rare: a pair being the largest multiple known. Ex the Brian Moorhouse Estate. WITHDRAW.

Inclinados: 300 reis, a very fine and fresh example of this rare adhesive in a deep shade with good to huge margins all round, showing parts of the adjoining stamp at top, tied to 1847 letter sheet from Rio to Campos endorsed "p. Vapor" by "CORREIO GENERAL DA CORTE / BRAZIL 24. 4 1847" in red. The cover with filing folds well away from adhesive and datestamp, some tropicalisation not distracting at all from the extreme rarity of this franking...

1844/46: Inclinado 600 r. black on thin greyish paper, the unused horizontal pair with ample margin at top and large on three sides, closed scissor cut in margin only at top away from the design. Just one block of four, one vertical strip of four and three mint pairs are recorded by Taveira (see pages 274-286). An exceptionally rare multiple for the connoisseur. Signed WHC (William H. 1891: Liberty Head 100 r. blue and red, perf. 13½, horizontal tete-beche pair, unused, with most part original gum, fresh colour, diagonal crease to bottom left corner of one stamp, not obvious from front, some adherence to the gum, scarce; additionally comes with Scott 109a frame inverted variety, a single tied to a small piece, some soiling, scarce duo Scott = $960 for both 109a & b. 1906/16: Coil Stamps, 100 r. aniline rose and 200 r. ultramarine, imperforate vertical coil stamps, top corner imprint marginal blocks of eighteen (6 x 3), each stamp with small punched hole and overprinted "SPECIMEN" in blue, with "F4713" print order number in top margin, with full original gum, also comes with a vertical strip of five of the 100 r. and a vertical pair and vertical strip of three of the 200 r. all with punched hole and...

1844/46: Inclinados: group of four used blocks of four, comprising three 10 r.  and one 30 r., all but one, which is touching small part of top, are good to large four margins, in particular noted, a very fine example of the 10 r. in an attractive grey-black shade printed upon thin greyish paper from right of sheet with vertical marginal rule, cancelled in red, also a 10 r. cancelled by a very fine "SANTOS" datestamp in black (9 December 1846...

1850: Verticais: group of used blocks, pairs and singles, comprising block of four of the 10 r., vertical strip of three of the 20 r., side marginal block of eight and block of four of the 60 r., vertical pair and two singles of the 180 r., two singles of the  300 r. including one tied to small piece and a vertical pair and two singles of the 600 r. value, all with four margins, most with large to very large, some faults, although several...
