lot # 500 - guatemala
1899: 'Champerico Provicional', vertically folded envelope endorsed 'Cia.de Agencias Champerico Limitada' bearing two provisional stamps, 10 c. and 20 c. with inscription 'Champerico Provicional' (wrong spelling), that are cancelled bei cds "CORREOS CHAMPERICO 16 ENE 1899" in violet, addressed to Hamburg, Germany, as a similar cover pictured in Goodman Handbook, page 180. Goodman states, the pictured cover was unique, while the present example has a different disposition of the stamps. The cover differs also from the Goodman example by the type of taxation, which is a handwritten mark '80' in blue. Arrival "HAMBURG 14.2.1899" and two transit cancels on the back. It appears that the stamps haven't been recognized, however emanating from the 'provisional period' at a time of great shortage of postage stamps and genuinely circulated. A rare and desirable curiosity! Ex the Brian Moorhouse Estate.
