1878: Stampless dummy cover with the Vaile Experimental Trial Machine cancellation in black. Despite the trial taking place in London during April 1878 all the dater dials indicate "C / N.Z. / AUCKLAND / SE 2 / 74". The cancel having a three line continuous bar obliterator with two dater dials. The machine was rejected by the Post Office. Rare; one of seven surviving examples, five of which are in private hands and two in the British Postal Archives.
