Reverse Horse's head left; behind, palm tree; below neck, Punic mem. Jenkins 263 (O81/R219); SNG Lloyd 1641 (same obv. die). Lightly toned. Choice Very Fine.

Macedonian Kingdom. Alexander III the Great. Silver Tetradrachm (16.9 g), 336-323 BC. Tarsos, ca. 316-301 BC. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion's skin headress. Reverse AΛEΞANΔP[OY], Zeus seated left, holding eagle and scepter; in left field, ΣT; below throne, monogram. Price 3803 (Carrhae). Images are in high relief and coin is toned. About Extremely Fine.

The reassignment of Price nos. 3796-3809 to Tarsos from Carrhae follows from the discovery of an important new gold stater, CNG 85, 301, which shares the primary control with this coin but otherwise parallels the staters from Tarsos (Price 3801-2).

Mauretania, the land of the Moors, was annexed by the Romans in 33 BC. However, eight years later Augustus restored the kingdom and placed Juba II on the throne. During the reign of Claudius, the country became a Roman province and was governed by procurators.
