This type is commonly referred to as the 'Tribute Penny' of the Bible after the well-known New Testament story in St. Matthew's Gospel (22, 17-21).

An extremely wealthy senator, Didius Julianus purchased his elevation to the imperial throne at an auction held by Praetorian Guard. The dire shame associated with these disgraceful events set off a series of revolts in several parts of the Roman world, with Septimius Severus eventually becoming the successful contender after much bloodshed.
