The "Tanya" which was Printed during the Lifetime of Its Author, the Alter Rebbe – Zholkva, 1789 – First Edition of 'Igeret Ha'Teshuvah' - Surprisingly Enthusiastic Approbation by the Camp of the 'Mitnagdim'!

On the title page of the book, it was printed: "Tanya which is the book Likutei Amarim … and we have added a touch to it … by the genius … the rabbi author, explaining the essence of Teshuvah (repentance) and its matters and it is the third section which was not contained in the first edition which was printed in Slavita …" In this special edition, which was printed in the author's lifetime, his name was not mentioned at all! Thus, it was most likely printed without his knowledge.

This edition was the second edition of the Tanya, yet the first edition of the chapters of "Igeret Ha'teshuvah" – Kama edition (the author printed "Igeret Ha'teshuvah" – Batra edition in Shklow in 1806).

Before Igeret Ha'Teshuva [leaf 67/1] it was printed: "So said the printer: the genius author had a good gem, a manuscript talking about matters of repentance and to provide for the public, I printed it".

Approbations by the most prominent rabbis:

Approbation by Rabbi Moshe Zvi Hirsch Meislish Av Beit Din of Zholkva, where the book was printed.

Approbation by Rabbi Yitzchak Ha'Levi of Lvov Av Beit Din of Krakow, one of the leading rabbis who opposed Hassidism! This is most surprising, since in 1786, he was one of the first to sign a ban on the Hassidim of Krakow and according to his instructions, the book "Tzava'at Ha'Ribash" was burned! However, his approbation of this book is most enthusiastic, praising the author and his book! This might be explained by the fact that the author's identity is not mentioned in this edition of the book and therefore, Rabbi Yitzchak did not know the author was a Hassidic Rebbe.

ספר "התניא" שנדפס בחיי המחבר האדמו"ר הזקן זיע"א – זולקווה, תקנ"ט – מהדורה ראשונה של 'איגרת התשובה' – הסכמה נלהבת ומפתיעה ממחנה ה"מתנגדים"!
ספר ליקוטי-אמרים תניא, מאת האדמו"ר הזקן רבי שניאור זלמן מלאדי. זולקווא, [תקנ"ט 1798]. סטפנסקי חסידות, מס' 623.

בשער הספר נדפס: "תניא והוא ספר ליקוטי אמרים... והוספנו בו נופך... מהגאון... הרב המחבר נר"ו, והוא לבאר מהות התשובה וענינה, והוא חלק שלישי אשר לא היה בראשוני' הנדפס בסלאוויטא...". במהדורה מיוחדת, שנדפסה בחיי המחבר, הועלם שמו לחלוטין! ככל הנראה היא נדפסה ללא ידיעתו.

מהדורה זו היא הדפסה שניה של ספר התניא, אולם בה נדפסו לראשונה בסוף הספר פרקי "אגרת התשובה" – מהדורה קמא (בשקלוב תקס"ו הדפיס המחבר את "אגרת התשובה" מהדורה בתרא).

לפני אגרת התשובה [דף סז/1] נדפס: "אמר המתעסק: מרגלית טובה היתה בידי מהגאון המחבר נר"ו, קונטרס בכ"י מדבר מעניני תשובה, ולזכות את הרבים העליתיו על מזבח הדפוס".

הסכמה מרבי משה צבי הירש מייזליש אב"ד זולקווה, בה נדפס הספר.

הסכמה מרבי יצחק הלוי מלבוב אב"ד קראקא, מגדולי המתנגדים לתנועת החסידות! הדבר מפתיע ביותר, משום שהוא היה מראשי החותמים על חרם נגד החסידים בקראקא בשנת תקמ"ו, ובהוראתו נשרף ספר צוואת הריב"ש! ואילו בספר זה יצא מגדרו בהסכמתו, והוא מפליג בשבח המחבר וספרו!

ואלו דבריו בהסכמתו החמה:

"...ראו דבר ה'... דברים נפלאים אשר יצאו מפי עיר וקדיש, מלין לצד עילאה ימלל, יהב חכמה לחכימין, הפליא עצה הגדיל תושיה... בכרך הגדול והנורא הזה, ס' לקוטי אמרים אשר פי השם יקבנו תניא קדישא. ומגודל ענוותו לא נודע שם המחבר, אמנם מכותלי דבריו הצצתי שהמחבר הוא איש אלקים קדוש, ובקראי שנים ושלשה דלתות, בינותי בדבריו הקדושים שהמה מאירים עיני השכל באור צח ומצוחצח, חכו ממתקים...".

אפשר לתרץ את התמיהה בעובדה שזהות המחבר הוסתרה במהדורה זו, ורבי יצחק הלוי לא ידע שמדובר באדמו"ר חסידי.
